# Licensing: what is free to take, and what is not ours
## In short
**What this project made is given to the public domain** under [CC0 1.0](LICENSE), with the exceptions named below.
Use it, copy it, change it, sell it. You do not need permission. You do not need to give credit.
**The exceptions.** Not everything we made is under that grant. The AI-generated voices in the owner preview audio are used under free non-commercial terms;
other sounds and voices generated with AI services (Fish Audio and others) are used under those services' terms; the other stems of the owner preview audio and a few generated pictures have no licence granted;
and two works are not given away at all. All of them are listed below.
This repository, and the website built from it, are a **compilation**. They also contain
other people's work. **We do not license that.** It stays under its own terms, listed below.
If a thing is not listed as ours, take it from its authors, not from us.
## Ours (given to the public domain, CC0 1.0)
- The game code: `index.html`, `src/`, `tools/`, `perf/`, `skills/`, the tests.
- The story: scripts, texts, the cue sheet, the documents.
- The art made for the game: procedural textures and overlays, the key art, the FULL-LIFE logo.
- The sounds the game synthesises in code (weapons, world, train, chainsaw engine).
- Made by **normalMan** (the owner), with **Claude** (an AI model by Anthropic, used as a tool),
**astra** (the sound agent) and the debug agent. Where AI-made work carries no copyright at
all, there is nothing to license; where it does, it is given to the public domain.
(What was generated with AI services and is listed in the sections below is covered by those sections instead.)
## Sounds and voices generated with AI services: used under the services' terms, not offered as CC0
Some sounds and voices were **generated on the owner's own accounts with AI services** (Fish Audio and others), or locally with an open model.
The owner may use them as they please, and they are used here under the services' terms (or the model's licence).
We do **not** offer them as CC0, and the grant above does not cover them:
- the 21 sound effects in `assets/audio/fish-owner`, and the four clips in `assets/story/audio/tribute` that are made from them;
- the voice and effect pack in `assets/astra-fish-audio` (dialogue, effects and the Supervisor's casting preview; not its `baseline/` folder, which is the game's own synthesis, and not the licence texts);
- the voice files in `story/tts`: the Supervisor's lines come from Fish Audio; the PA, narrator and Freeman lines were made locally with the open Kokoro-82M model (Apache 2.0 weights) and are not offered as CC0 either.
Who made what, and under which terms: the Credits screen of the game and `assets/audio/credits.json`.
If you reuse any of this, check the service's current terms first (Fish Audio: ).
## Not ours (kept under their own terms)
| What | Where | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| three.js 0.170 | `vendor/three/` | MIT. The notice is `vendor/three/LICENSE` and must stay with copies. |
| Fonts: Special Elite, Courier Prime, Big Shoulders Display | `assets/story/fonts/` | Apache 2.0 and SIL OFL 1.1. The texts are next to the files. |
| About 215 sound clips (monsters, chainsaw, gore, ...) from other authors | `assets/audio/` (all folders except `fish-owner`) | Each clip has its own licence: mostly CC0, some CC BY (**credit required**), a few public domain. Author and licence of every file: `assets/audio/credits.json`, `assets/audio/CREDITS.md` and the Credits screen of the game. |
| The astra logo picture: the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51), NASA and ESA, Hubble Heritage Team | `story/tribute/source/astra-logo.jpg`, `story/tribute/img/logo_astra.webp` | Public domain, as recorded on Wikimedia Commons (`File:Messier51 sRGB.jpg`). |
| "Muffled Distant Explosion" by NenadSimic, on OpenGameArt: | inside the `*.effects` stems of `assets/story/preview/owner-20261007/` | CC0 1.0. No credit is required; it is credited here as a courtesy. |
| "Mechanical Explosion" by Spring Spring, on OpenGameArt: | the same stems | CC0 1.0 (courtesy credit). |
| "Electricity Game Sound Pack" by faxcorp, on OpenGameArt: | the same stems | CC0 1.0 (courtesy credit). |
| "Glass Break" by Till Behrend (submitted by TinyWorlds), on OpenGameArt: | the same stems | CC0 1.0 (courtesy credit). |
| "Monster snarls" by Darsycho, on OpenGameArt: | the same stems (excerpts); the game's own monster clips from the same page are in `assets/audio/credits.json` | CC0 1.0 (courtesy credit). |
| "DC metro interior", a field recording by crashoverride6, on Freesound (item 219233): | an excerpt in the `*.train` stems of `assets/story/preview/owner-20261007/` | CC0 1.0 on its item page (courtesy credit). |
## Left out on purpose: ask the owner first
These two are the owner's own works, but they are **not** given away. Do not reuse them without asking.
- **The plush picture** (`story/tribute/img/plush.png` and its source).
- **The Seal of Insanity animation** (`story/tribute/img/seal*`, `story/tribute/source/seal-of-insanity.gif`).
It is built from Bijan Bowen's likeness and used here with his approval. That approval does not pass to anyone else.
They appear in the tribute intro and in screenshots (`shots/`). A screenshot is ours except for the pictures that are not given away or not licensed
(those two, and the generated pictures in the next section) when they are inside it.
## Pictures from the owner's image service: no licence granted, ask first
The intro's 12 picture plates and their 4 blur twins (`story/tribute/img/plates/`) and the share picture of the
title page (`assets/story/menu/og.jpg`) were generated on **2026-10-02 on the owner's own image service**
(model ids `astra6.unthawed/gpt-image-2.5`, `-flare`, `-sunburst`; the list is in `REUSE.toml` and `story/tribute/assets.json`).
They are the owner's own generated pictures. These pictures are shown with the owner's permission.
Their licence has not been granted: they are not covered by CC0; ask first. The map marks them `LicenseRef-OwnerToDecide`.
## Voices from AI services: free, non-commercial terms
Voices made with AI services used under their **free, non-commercial** terms are used by the owner under those terms.
They are **not** covered by CC0. They are marked in the map below (`REUSE.toml`) and described in the stems' `PROVENANCE.md`; they get no credit line.
Use them only where the service's terms allow it. If the project ever earns money, they must be re-cleared or replaced.
The **owner preview audio** (`assets/story/preview/owner-20261007`, the audio engineer's mastered montage that the game plays for the intro, the ride and the arrival)
is a mix of sources of different terms. Its dialogue and scare stems carry AI-generated voices (free non-commercial terms: marked `LicenseRef-FreeNonCommercial`).
Its other stems mix AI-generated music (the opening score and the piano of the intro), music and effects synthesised in code, the CC0 clips credited in the table above,
a CC0 field-recording excerpt and the owner's own keyboard recording; as mixes they are marked `LicenseRef-OwnerToDecide` and are not offered as CC0.
What is in each stem: `assets/story/preview/owner-20261007/PROVENANCE.md`.
## Names and people
- CC0 gives no trademark rights. "FULL-LIFE" is the owner's title. Other names of products,
games or people that appear (for example the Half-Life reference in the intro) belong to their owners.
- No Claude or Anthropic logo is used. The word "Claude" appears as plain text in the credits.
## Using it
For everything that is given away, there is nothing to ask and nothing to sign. If you want to be kind, say "FULL-LIFE by normalMan". That is a wish, not a rule.
For the exceptions above, check their terms, or ask first where it says so.
## The map
`REUSE.toml` is a machine-readable map of who owns what and under which licence (generated by
`node tools/licensing/build-reuse.mjs`). It follows the REUSE format but we do not claim full REUSE compliance.
`REUSE.toml` lives in the source repository, not in the website.
